Synopsis

This new book is abridged from Lee Kuan Yew: A Life in Pictures, features private and public pictures of Lee. It includes some new photos as well as photos from his later years. They chosen for their strength and quality, and edited to fit into chronology of Lee's life.

"In putting together this keepsake photo album, I hope to capture the greatest moments of LKY, the public and private man. Most of all, I hope it will bring you much joy, as it has me." -- Stephanie Yeow, The Straits Times Picture Editor

The 188 photos in this book are captioned in English and Chinese

From the Preface:

LKY, as he is fondly known, is very photographer's dream and nightmare. He is ever intimidating, oblivious to the clicking mobs, impatient with the time-sapping craft of pgotography. His aversion to flash photography, especially in his late years, mean that photographers had less than a minute to shoot, before being asked to turn off flashes.

LKY is not one to pose. He never fusses over public image. He refuses to be staged. Prompting him to repeat a move for the camera? Out of the question. Not ready? You missed the shot. I dont't remember anyone ever calling out to him to look in their direction, the way press photographers rountinely cajole politicians.

In 2013, when LKY received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the National University of Singapore, one photographer bravely beckoned him to hold up his newly minted scroll. Squaring his shoulders, LKY said: I will hold it my way".
